Dr Jim Humphries Joins The

College Station, TX (PRWEB) April 16, 2012

The College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences is pleased to announce the addition of a unique position to the faculty of the veterinary medical school. Dr. Jim Humphries, a 1977 graduate of the school, joins the faculty in order to bring a rare set of talents and expertise to the world famous center of veterinary medical learning.

Dr. Humphries built a national media career from a once a week spot on WFAA-TV in Dallas, Texas in the mid 1980?s. He went on to be the veterinary contributor for the national CBS News morning show for 12 years and has appeared regularly on CNN, Animal Planet, Discovery Channel and just about every national television and radio program in the country. His radio talk show was once syndicated into over 1,200 markets and he has written for Family Circle Magazine, USA Today, Women?s Day and many other national magazines.

His experience came through local media, then skyrocketed when called upon to be an industry spokesperson for a variety of veterinary companies. After 25 national media tours and meeting many like-minded colleagues ?on the road,? he realized that our nation?s veterinarians were eager to appear in media, but did not have the resources to make that happen. Dr. Humphries formed the Veterinary News Network (http://www.MyVNN.com) and went on to organize the nation?s media veterinarians into one highly successful organization that reaches over 800 million consumers each year.

Further realizing how important credibility and certification are to the media gatekeepers, Dr. Humphries also founded the American Society of Veterinary Journalists (http://www.ASVJ.org). The goal of ASVJ is to set some quality standards in veterinary journalism and help both media and the public understand which media contributors are the true ?animal health experts.?

As an Adjunct Professor of Media and Communications, Dr. Humphries will bring his real world communications skills and experience to students, faculty and our nation?s veterinary practitioners in a variety of media training classes, experiential learning and project. He even plans to produce real news stories as student projects to be used in all forms of traditional and emerging media.

?This is a once in a life-time opportunity for me to use the experience I?ve gained in 27 years of media work to help my colleagues do a much better job of communicating the great stories of veterinary medicine to the general public. I look forward to being highly creative and passing on this much needed talent to future generations of Doctors of Veterinary Medicine. It is an honor and a wonderful challenge at this point in my career,? said Humphries.

Dr. Lori Teller of Houston, TX and past president of the Texas Veterinary Medical Association says, ?Dr Humphries? leadership helps veterinarians not only tell their amazing stories, but have the courage to reach out to media in order to do so. There are many issues facing veterinarians today that need media attention, and we know that takes intelligent preparation. His years of news room experience and skill at creating media messaging has given many veterinarians the confidence to discuss sensitive and even controversial topics. This new position at Texas A&M University will help create a new generation of 'media ready' veterinary communicators!?

I was driven at high speed across Dallas to a veterinarian hospital, barely clinging to life. The vet, her husband, an orthopedic veterinarian, and other wonderful and caring hospital staff members immediately initiated emergency procedures to stop my bleeding and prepare me for my first surgery. A week later, I underwent a second surgical procedure to combat infection and to use skin grafts from other parts of my body to cover my extensive wounds. I spent more than a month at their hospital where I was constantly told what a wonderful dog I am and how important it was for me to survive.
