The 2012 National Healthcare Staff Compensation Survey, which is co-sponsored by The American Society for Healthcare Human Resources Administration (ASHHRA), reported the average projected merit increase over the next 12 months across all staff positions to be 2.2%. Looking back to the previous 12 months, the national average merit increase given was 2.2%, which is consistent with prior projections for 2011. If trending remains consistent, the 2012 projected increase is likely to be consistent with actual increases for the year.

The actual average for market increases over the last 12 months continues to remain low at only 1.0%, nationally, across all staff positions.

Unique from other industry surveys, the 2012 National Healthcare Staff Compensation Survey features a special section dedicated to best practices and issues in staff compensation. The additional insights provide organizations with supporting information to make smarter decisions when designing staff compensation programs.

The Christmas holidays are upon us and this often means leaving our beloved pets behind in a kennel or cattery or in
the care of a pet feeder or neighbour.
If your pet is really part of the family, a growing range of accommodation facilities
permits you to take your pet with you.

Some tips for travelling with your pet by car:
It is safer for you and your pet if he or she is confined to a cage or crate while en-route. A boot separation device is
better for all concerned.
Make sure you secure carriers with a seat belt or bungee cord.
Do not allow dogs to hang out the window - it’s dangerous and may cause head, neck and eye injuries as well as
airborne infections.
For dogs, make pit stops at least every two hours for exercise.
Give only half normal food in the morning and feed the remainder when you reach your destination.
Carry fresh cold water and a drinking bowl.
Do not leave your pet in a hot vehicle. Remember, shade moves.
Keep your leash handy and use care when opening doors in heavy traffic areas.
Be aware of your dog’s behaviour when left alone - barking and whining cause stress both to the animal and passers by.
If the weather is warm use your vehicle’s air conditioning.
Always make sure that air is being circulated frequently.
Pack a sturdy leash and well fitted collar with identification tag carrying your phone number.
Pack waste removal bags and a litter tray and litter for cats.
Pack some of your pet’s bedding and favourite toys.
Pack a Pet First Aid kit, which you can purchase from your local vet. It should contain at least:
Tweezers for removing foreign objects from fur or paws,
Cotton swabs for cleaning wounds,
Antibacterial wash, Telfa pads, Wide crepe bandage, Gloves, Scissors, Vet clinic

Phone numbers for your regular vet and the nearest vet while on holiday.

We always suggest that the very first and most important question to ask is which cat litter is the one that your cats will use? Better yet - which is the one that your cats will find the most inviting? That one will be the best cat litter for your cats. We?ll hear from some trusted sources below that say this usually means:?

-Clumping litter, so that the litter box remains very clean with twice daily scooping;

-Truly unscented litter - it should not have any chemical fragrance (these fragrances are for humans, not cats). Most cats find these fragrances overwhelming;

-99.9% dust free cat litter that is hypo-allergenic;?

-All natural litter (one ingredient is best, the less carbon, additives, and blue dots you see the better).

There are many choices on the market. Let?s hear about these choices from the ones who matter - the cats! Here?s a real life test noted on the ASPCA website:

?In 1990, Dr. Peter Borchelt, an applied animal behaviorist, ran three 10-day tests to determine feline litter preference using a comparison of 14 types of commercial litter as well as topsoil mixed with clay litter and playbox sand. Each cat had 6 boxes to choose from; midway through the testing, the boxes were moved to prevent placement preference from overriding litter type preference. In test after test, fine-grained clumping litter was used more than twice as often as its nearest competitor, with boxes of wood chips, grain litter and recycled paper litter going completely unused. Borchelt concludes, 'These data support the clinical observation that an important factor in cats? preference for litter material is its texture, granularity or coarseness...a finely textured clay was preferred to clay with larger particle sizes. But playbox sand, which is also finely textured, was not preferred much more than coarse clay, perhaps because of the weight of the particles.'?
