To support its commitment to sustainable residential design and building, The House Designers (THD) announces its 3rd Annual ENERGY STAR design competition. Leading residential designers and architects throughout the U.S. will submit original, cutting-edge construction-ready blueprints which will be judged by industry experts and the Earth Advantage Institute.

The first two competitions produced nearly 60 environmentally conscientious house plans that have been well-received by consumers and builders throughout the world. ?We decided it was time that we do our part to lessen the residential building impact on mother earth by establishing a partnership with the EPA to offer online house plans that are ENERGY STAR approved. Home plans in this special collection guides consumers and builders through the process of building a home that is ENERGY STAR approved with the help of a HERS rater and an ENERGY STAR builder,? says Tammy Crosby, Chief Operating Officer of The House Designers. ?Ultimately, this reduces energy costs and encourages the use of residential building products that are energy efficient and have been manufactured with recycled material using sustainable manufacturing practices.?

The House Designers also made all of their house plans available in PDF files (electronic format plans) instead of printed blueprints that require paper, ink and transportation resources. Crosby adds, ?We?re trying to be as environmentally sensitive as we can in all areas of our business and ceased printing our nationally distributed 194 page magazine three years ago when we partnered with ENERGY STAR to alleviate the 70% or more shredding of unread magazines that happens to the majority of magazines on newsstands.? An e-zine was created to replace the newsstand magazine titled, Her Dream Home, focusing on what women want in new homes and floor plans.

This year?s winning house plans will be announced at The House Designers? annual meeting in Austin, Texas on Friday, June 1, 2012. Residential product manufacturers like Therma-Tru, Fypon, Wayne Dalton and Lumber Liquidators who are committed to green building strategies will have their sustainable products showcased on the construction blueprints.
